From Quantum Ideas to Startups: The First QAI Ventures Demo Day at uptownBasel

Quantum physics, entrepreneurship, music and a touch of Halloween

On November 2, 2023, the first QAI Ventures Demo Day brought the international quantum startup community together at uptownBasel. The event marked the successful completion of the inaugural QAI Ventures Accelerator cohort and showcased how emerging quantum technologies are being transformed into real-world business ideas.

Over five months, the participating startups developed their technologies and business models with the support of QAI Ventures and the wider QuantumBasel ecosystem. At the Demo Day in Arlesheim, four companies took to the stage to present their progress to investors, industry experts, technology partners and members of the quantum community.

Four startups, four approaches to emerging technology

The first graduating cohort reflected the diversity of the rapidly developing quantum and AI landscape.

Anaqor from Germany is working to make quantum computing more accessible through its quantum application platform.

Kipu Quantum, also from Germany, develops application- and hardware-specific quantum algorithms with a focus on making quantum computing useful for industrial applications.

Swiss startup Moonlight AI is applying artificial intelligence to cancer diagnosis and monitoring while exploring how quantum technologies could further advance its approach.

qdc, with roots in the US and Poland, focuses on using quantum technologies to address real-world optimization challenges.

What connects the four companies is the ambition to move advanced computing technologies closer to practical applications.

More than an accelerator

The QAI Ventures Accelerator was created to provide quantum and AI startups with more than capital alone.

Embedded in the QuantumBasel ecosystem at uptownBasel, the program connects founders with an international network of mentors, corporate partners and researchers. Participants also gain access to quantum computing technologies through the QuantumBasel network, giving them the opportunity to develop and test their ideas using advanced hardware.

The first cohort demonstrated another important aspect of this approach: collaboration between the startups themselves. New partnerships emerged during the program – exactly the kind of cross-company exchange the ecosystem is designed to encourage.

Where technology meets community

The Demo Day reflected this philosophy beyond the startup pitches.

International quantum experts and entrepreneurs joined the event, while talks, performances, music and a Halloween celebration turned the evening into a meeting point for the growing quantum community.

It was a reminder that building a new technology ecosystem requires more than computing power. It requires people from different disciplines to meet, exchange ideas and create connections.

Building the next generation of quantum companies at uptownBasel

For uptownBasel, the first QAI Ventures Demo Day represented another step in developing Arlesheim into an international location for quantum computing and artificial intelligence.

QuantumBasel provides access to technology and expertise. QAI Ventures complements this infrastructure by supporting the entrepreneurs and startups developing businesses around these emerging technologies.

Together, they create an environment where technology, entrepreneurship, investment and industry come together in one ecosystem.

The graduation of the first QAI Ventures Accelerator cohort marked the end of five intensive months – but also the beginning of the next chapter for its founders and for the growing quantum ecosystem at uptownBasel.
