Switzerland’s First Physical Quantum Computer Inaugurated at uptownBasel

‍A major milestone for Switzerland’s quantum ecosystem

QuantumBasel and uptownBasel have inaugurated the country’s first physical quantum computer at the innovation campus in Arlesheim. The IonQ Forte Enterprise system brings advanced quantum computing infrastructure directly to Switzerland – opening up new opportunities for companies, researchers and academic institutions to explore and develop real-world applications of quantum technology.

With the inauguration of the system, QuantumBasel is taking another significant step in its mission to make quantum computing accessible to industry and research.

Located at uptownBasel in Arlesheim, the quantum computer provides organizations with direct access to advanced quantum technology in Switzerland. This creates an environment where expertise, infrastructure and concrete industrial challenges can come together in one place.

From cloud access to physical quantum infrastructure

Quantum computing has largely been accessed remotely through cloud-based platforms. Having a physical system on site creates new opportunities for collaboration, experimentation and the development of expertise directly within the ecosystem.

The IonQ Forte Enterprise system provides QuantumBasel and its partners with dedicated quantum computing capabilities and strengthens the infrastructure available to companies and research institutions.

For QuantumBasel, however, the technology itself is only one part of the equation. The aim is to connect quantum computing with industry-specific knowledge and translate its potential into applications that address real-world challenges.

From life sciences and healthcare to manufacturing, logistics, finance and energy, quantum computing could eventually provide new approaches to problems that are difficult to solve with classical computing alone.

Building a European hub for quantum computing and AI

The arrival of the quantum computer further strengthens Arlesheim’s position within the European quantum technology landscape.

Through its partnership with IonQ and a growing international network of technology providers, researchers, startups and industrial companies, QuantumBasel is building an ecosystem focused not only on access to technology, but also on its practical application.

Artificial intelligence plays an equally important role. By bringing quantum computing and AI expertise together, QuantumBasel creates opportunities to explore how these technologies can complement each other and contribute to the next generation of industrial innovation.

Technology that companies can put to work

At uptownBasel, emerging technologies are not viewed as an end in themselves. The focus is on creating an environment in which they can be tested, understood and applied to concrete business and research challenges.

The physical quantum computer adds an important new dimension to this approach.

Companies and academic institutions can work with QuantumBasel to build expertise, develop algorithms and investigate potential use cases. This helps bridge the gap between rapidly advancing quantum research and the requirements of industry.

A milestone for uptownBasel – and for Switzerland

The inauguration represents more than the installation of a new computing system. It marks another step towards establishing a long-term quantum and AI ecosystem in the Basel region.

As an international competence center for Industry 4.0, uptownBasel brings together technology, industry, research and entrepreneurship. QuantumBasel extends this ecosystem into some of the most advanced areas of computing and provides a platform for organizations to engage with technologies that could shape the coming decades.

With Switzerland’s first physical quantum computer now operating in Arlesheim, this future is becoming tangible.

A new chapter for quantum computing in Switzerland has begun – at uptownBasel.
